With Halloween just around the corner, we thought it might be fun to talk about spooky things and perhaps share a fun story or anecdote that fit in with the season.

I could talk about my grandmother. A very grandmotherly type. You know, the sweet old lady who bakes cookies for the kids and putters about in her garden, or spends hours making jelly or putting up preserves? Can you imagine how shocked I was when I heard the story about her younger years? And I’m not talking about her teen years, but when she was a young mother, who put her kids to bed after they went trick or treating, then donned a clown costume and went out to shoot out streetlights with her 22 and generally cutting up with other young parents. I don’t even think they’d been drinking. Gave me a whole new appreciation for that wonderful lady who graced my life for so many years, taught me how to make bread and jam, and got down on the floor with my own little kids to build towers made of old tin cans that made very satisfying crashing sounds when the tower came down to the delight of her great grandchildren.

I could talk about true horror stories, like that of the Borden House in Fall River Massachusetts and the never solved mystery of the deaths of Andrew and Abby Borden. Or I could suggest you visit Edgar Allen Poe’s story about a man walled up alive in the catacombs. Maybe Washington Irving’s the Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Headless Horseman, or Turn of the Screw by Henry James. And I’m sure your local library has a whole display of appropriately scary reads.

But I thought I’d share a story I wrote. It’s based on real events in my life but the names were changed to protect the innocent – and not so innocent.

It was a mixed bag, our gang of kids. We hung out together mostly because our parents were friends and we all went to the same church. Some girls, some boys, aged three to fourteen. Bruce was the only teenager, and the youngest, two girls were just three. Bruce always had stories to tell, the kind that made the girls cling to each other and the boys square their shoulders to prove they could be just as big, and bold, and manly as Bruce was. Read On>>

Booo!!! Enjoy. And don’t eat too much candy – at least not all at once. It’s okay to hoard and make it last.

Now it's time to check out my fellow bloggers and see what kind of mischief they have gotten up to....

Skye, I enjoyed your story. I wonder what today's kids would make of a ganging from teenage to toddler?
